Opening Doors of Opportunity for North Minneapolis Youth
Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) provides a Christian outreach focused on the spiritual, intellectual, and physical development of inner city youth and their families. North Minneapolis youth are challenged by generational poverty, high unemployment, low graduation rates, addictions, juvenile crime, and fatherless families. Seeking to overcome these challenges, Hospitality House is committed to loosen the grip of academic struggles, broken homes and economic hardships by opening doors of opportunity and offering hope. Consider these statistics:
- 93% of HHYD youth are students of color
- 92% of HHYD students live below the poverty line
- 51% of HHYD students come from single parent, grandparent, foster or guardian homes
- 71% of HHYD families have less than a $30,000 annual household income
With structured programming, Hospitality House is able to help students overcome their challenges and open doors of opportunity to succeed in life.
Annually, HHYD depends on over 500 volunteers to assist with a variety of opportunities. Academic volunteer duties range from reading with students, helping with homework, to assistance with classroom organization. Volunteers can also work with students in the areas of art, theater, dance, playing games, sewing, cooking, teaching science experiments or sharing talents of their own during Fun Friday activities. St. Michael’s congregation members are encouraged to become involved in any way they feel moved. Whether it’s through prayer, connecting with resources, or with hands-on opportunities, any and all support of this ministry is highly valued and appreciated.
